GM says it is developing U.S.-based battery cells to reduce dependence on China
General Motors says it is in the early stages of developing next-generation battery cells aimed at reducing U.S. dependence on China and increasing the use of domestically sourced materials. GM battery chief Kurt Kelty said the company is working toward a domestic supply chain over the next two to three years, with an initial focus on energy storage systems and longer-term use in EVs. GM is partnering with Peak Energy on sodium-ion cells and expects commercial production around 2029. The push comes as the Trump administration has criticized Ford over its China ties.
